New Netherlands

The Dutch West Indian Company founded New Netherlands for profit. In 1627, Peter Minuit became governor. Fur trading posts were one of the first settlements but, Minuit bought Manhattan Island from the Manates Indians, and stared another settlement, New Amsterdam, the capital of New Netherlands. On his voyage, Henry Hudson made land claims for New Netherlands. New Netherlands accepted anyone, no matter what religion or country they came from. The population of New Netherlands included German, English, Swedish, French, and slaves. In 1647, Peter Stuyvesant was declared governor. New Netherlands took over New Sweden, in 1655. The Dutch West Indian Company was an important company in New Netherlands. The owners of The Dutch West Indian Company controlled many settlements in New Netherlands.

In 1585, Walter Raleigh found the first English Colony in North America. The colony was named Virginia, after Queen Elizabeth 1. The Dutch wanted to find a new route to Indies and exploit a colony that wasn’t claimed. The Dutch colonies interest to Americans came in 1602. Henry Hudson took the first steps in the Dutch colonies in1609 and claimed Modern Day Canada and United States as part of the route. Hudson sailed up a river which was later named after him. In 1614, Adriaen Block into the lower Hudson River. Block Island was then named after him. When he returned, he was the first person to use the name New Netherlands.
