Jamestown & Roanoke The London Company asked for approval from the king so they can take 3 ships to the new colony to search for gold. The London Company tried to make a colony in North America called Roanoke but it failed. They didn’t know what happened to Roanoke, it was never figured out. Then they tried it again (140 miles away from Roanoke) called Jamestown named after King James the 1st.
Jamestown facts • John Smith took command of Jamestown on 1607 and made people grow crops. His saying was “if u don’t work u don’t get food” • Jamestown merchants grew and sold thousands of pounds of tobacco to England. • Tobacco was there cash crop • In 1619 the first woman and Africans came to Jamestown. Roanoke facts • The Crotona American Indians lived nearby • John White was the leader of the colony
