San Diego San Diego, California, after the Spanish settled in San Diego continued north, building more presidios and missions along the way. A Portuguese explorer sailed into now what is called San Diego Bay. His name was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and claimed the surrounding region for the King of Spain in 1542. A Spanish explorer, Don Sebastian Viscaino in 1620 the bay was named by him. When the Franciscan fathers established a mission on a hill overlooking the bay, close to a large Native American Village was the first European settlement, there was established in 1769. SG
